💡 GST Calculation Guide & Tips
🧮 How to Calculate GST
GST Exclusive (Add GST):
- GST Amount = Base × (Rate ÷ 100)
- Total = Base + GST Amount
- Example: ₹1000 + 18% = ₹1000 + ₹180 = ₹1180
GST Inclusive (Remove GST):
- Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
- GST Amount = Total - Base
- Example: ₹1180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1000 base, ₹180 GST
🏢 CGST vs SGST vs IGST
Intra-state Supply (Same State):
- CGST = GST ÷ 2 (Central Government)
- SGST = GST ÷ 2 (State Government)
- Example: 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST
Inter-state Supply (Different States):
- IGST = Full GST Rate (Central Government)
- Example: 18% GST = 18% IGST
📊 GST Rate Categories

📝 Practical GST Examples
Example 1: Restaurant Bill
Scenario: Food bill of ₹500 + 5% GST
Calculation:
- Base Amount: ₹500
- GST (5%): ₹500 × 0.05 = ₹25
- Total Bill: ₹500 + ₹25 = ₹525
- CGST: ₹12.50, SGST: ₹12.50
Example 2: Electronics Purchase
Scenario: Laptop priced at ₹59,000 (GST inclusive)
Calculation:
- Total Amount: ₹59,000
- Base: ₹59,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹50,000
- GST (18%): ₹59,000 - ₹50,000 = ₹9,000
- CGST: ₹4,500, SGST: ₹4,500

How this GST calculator works
Enter an amount and choose a GST rate (5%, 12%, 18%, 28% or custom). Select whether the amount is GST-inclusive or exclusive, and whether the supply is intra-state (CGST+SGST) or inter-state (IGST). For GST-inclusive, the base is back-calculated as amount (1 + rate), and GST is the difference between total and base. For GST-exclusive, GST is base rate and total = base + GST. When intra-state is chosen, GST splits equally into CGST and SGST; for inter-state, IGST applies.
Examples
Inclusive 18%: Amount ?1,180 inclusive . base = 1180/1.18 = ?1,000; GST = ?180 (CGST ?90 + SGST ?90, or IGST ?180).
Exclusive 12%: Base ?2,000 exclusive . GST = 2000 12% = ?240; total = ?2,240.
You can round to the nearest rupee for invoices or keep paise for precise calculations. Share a link or export CSV for records.
